Museums of Ioannina Perfecture

Ioannina is the capital of Ioannina regional unit and the region of Epirus, located about 450 km northwest of Athens and 300 km west of Thessaloniki. It is a well organized city with many historical monuments and museums. Ioannina was founded by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD while the first indications of human existence in the area are dated back to the Paleolithic period!

Archaeological Museum of Ioannina: It is situated in Litharitsa park and houses archaeological exhibits such as vessels, tools and coins, from 4 regional units of Epirus.

Byzantine Museum of Ioannina: It is located in the Itch Kale castle and houses collections of early Christian and Byzantine sculptures, books,  icons, ceramics and silverware.
