The Vikos Gorge

The Vikos Gorge lies on the slopes of Mount Tymfi, in Zagori region of northwestern Greece.

It is listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the deepest gorge in the world, with depth ranging from 450m to 1600m.

It is also the second longest in Europe after the Samaria Gorge on Crete (with length of about 20 km).

The Vikos Gorge has a variety of flora and fauna and is a shelter for many endangered species (it is part of the Vikos-Aoos National Park). There are many beautiful hiking trails but since the gorge is  rounded with mountains, it becomes dangerous to cross when it rains.

The most convenient way to visit Zagori region is by car. Concernirng accomodation, there are many traditional hotels in Zagoria villages.
