The Lesvos Petrified Forest is one of the few known petrified forests.
The Lesvos Petrified Forest Geopark has been declared a Protected
Natural Monument and it is a founding member of the European Geoparks
Network.
Actually, it is a petrified forest ecosystem made up of
hundreds of fossilized tree trunks which were covered by volcanic
material and petrified 20 million years ago, during the Late Oligocene
to Lower–Middle Miocene.
Impressive fossilised plants have been found in
many areas on the western part of the island.
There is a series of footpaths of particular geotouristic value that
tourists can follow in order to admire the the fossilised plants.
There' s also a well organized Museum at Sigri town, the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest.
